Team Sailing:
BoatworksTM

DURATION: Full or
Half-Day
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 8 to 40
In
cooperation with our partners at GEL, the leaders in sailboat-based
experiential learning, we can now
offer teambuilding training and outings using the growing sport of
team
sailing. It's team development with wind at your back and spray in
your face. An unforgettable experience for your team.
BoatWorks™
"We're all in this together!"
BoatWorks leverages a non-racing, multi-boat format to get your group gelling as
they battle the wind, the currents, their collective anxieties and a
special group challenge, all under the watchful eyes of a professional
coaching staff.
The
group challenge is similar to an obstacle course, but individual boats
can’t go it alone. Success requires extensive collaboration between
boats (simulating the importance of coordination among groups
within organizations) using hand-held radios. Communications skills
prove vital to the team's overall success.
BoatWorks™
is not a “learn-to-sail” course and no prior sailing experience is
required. Through a fast-paced agenda which runs from a dry-land
briefing through on-the-water practice and on to the challenge, your
people will learn only enough about sailing to conquer the course.
Amidst laughter, smiles and the exhilaration of wind and water, the
group will hone team skills vital to their success back in the office.

Team Development
Morning
sessions discuss roles which participants will need to fill to
successfully complete the challenge. The roles performed for each boat
include a helmsperson, main trimmer, jib trimmer, and strategist. During
the Roles Review, each team assesses its members’ attributes and jointly
determines a team configuration deemed most likely to produce good
performance. Each boat will have a coach aboard who will serve as an
instructor in the morning, and as a safety officer/consultant during the
afternoon Group Challenge. Teams are encouraged to draw upon this
resource as often as necessary to enhance performance.

Rite Aid Accounting Leaders Undergo "Out-of-the-Box"
Training Experiences
Nineteen leaders from Rite Aid's Accounting Group
ventured to Annapolis, Maryland, and undertook a new kind of learning experience when they set sail
in five boats on the Chesapeake Bay and lifted their team skills
a bit higher. Our
Boatworks team sailing activity teaches first how to
team sail a boat, then how to coordinate multiple boats through
a complicated zigzag course. The activity replicates the
coordination needed in today's fast-paced organizations.
According to the participants, it was a great day of learning. Click on the pictures to enlarge and enjoy!

Ernst & Young Consultants Hone Their
Teamwork Skills
Top
flight healthcare trending and analysis consultants took to the
seas at our facility in Annapolis, Maryland, to learn sailing,
teamwork, and organization coordination. The day was full of
sailing adventure on the Chesapeake Bay as teams negotiated the
zig-zag course individually, then as an organization with
several boats. Click on the pictures to enlarge and enjoy!

Teambuilding, Inc.'s Fearless Leader
Checks Out BoatWorksTM!
This
month Teambuilding, Inc.'s Peter Grazier spent a day sailing in
formation with a dozen people previewing
BoatWorksTM,
one of our newest team building sessions being conducted in
cooperation with our friends at GEL. "What surprised me," said
Mr. Grazier "was the
excellent
design of the team building intended to demonstrate how
organizations must not only work as a team within their
departments (one boat), but also with other departments
(multiple boats). It was a challenging, but achievable, task to
have all boats working in unison on a timed course. And with
practice and excellent training from the coaches at GEL, we
improved our times continuously. A wonderful day!"
