Causes of Conflict
There are combinations of factors.
Conflict situations are rarely clear-cut, single-source events. Usually, they are a combination of the
factors listed.
!
You and I may have a disagreement that
stemmed from a miscommunication. Maybe, under normal circumstances, we
would have discussed it and moved on. But today my child was cranky and
spilled the cereal on my clothes, my spouse was uncharacteristically short with me, and I was tired from a lack of good sleep.
Maybe I lashed out at you, blaming you for the miscommunication. The "orange got squeezed"
!
and what came out was my stress and frustration about my home life. It had nothing to do with you.
This is why it is critically important for us as responsible team members to understand the most basic elements of human behavior so that we can deal more effectively with these potential conflict situations.
Much conflict can be avoided with knowledge.
